And that's that.

Amid the shouts and tears of other med students, we opened our envelope. And it was Phoenix.

While slightly disappointed (I was hoping for a longshot Salt Lake City, and part of me wanted to stay home), I'm happy to move on with life and begin planning. All this wondering about where I'd live really distracted me from the whole wedding thing.

Mindy is used to bouncing around from town to town, but I'm a Portlander. It'll be sad to leave, but it'll be nice to live in a scorching wasteland for a few years. Maybe we'll set goals, like trying to eat out at every chain restaurant known to man. Maybe I can walk down to the local strip mall and read. We'll have to get little boots for our dog, Athena, because her feet might cook onto the pavement.

Public thanks to Dan Gibson and Bryan Catherman, from Phoenix and Salt Lake, respectively. They've been extremely kind in offering their assistance and support wherever we go. Now Dan actually has to live up to it. Also, thanks to the kind words and prayers from our readers. There's a lot worse going on in the world than moving to a new city, so we appreciate your thought.

Mindy is happy with the draw, and she'll be part of a great, up-and-coming pediatrics program at Phoenix Children's Hospital. They actively recruited her, which meant a lot because they recognize what a great doctor she's going to be.

I'm going to need the Collective to remind me of home.

WOO! PHOENIX WINS!

To defend my town, there are a lot of strip malls, but there are a number of wonderful places to eat and generally affordable, which is a plus.

It does get really hot. I won't lie.

Also, we have an NBA team here that will actually make the playoffs. That'll be nice, won't it?

yeah, and right about the time shaq reaches 500 pounds, Oden/Roy/Aldridge will be putting on their second of 12 championship rings.

Jordan,

Congratulations! (And sorry I haven't responded to your text message yet.) You will be missed, but I have little doubt you'll be back in a few years to take Portland by storm. Any sense on when you'll be moving? I'm assuming this summer or fall...

John

Jordan, we dump Shaq's salary the same time Lebron becomes available. Coincidence or moment of pure genius? You decide. Either way, you're stuck here while it happens, right?

Portland's got it planned to drop a ton of cap the year Chris Paul is available, so you tell me if LeBron can overcome a lineup of Oden/Roy/Aldrige/Outlaw/Paul at that point. Maybe LeBron will feel good filling joining those five guys on the all-star team...

thanks, John. i'll miss you guys, too.

moving will probably happen in late May/early June. It's coming fast. it's a shame to miss the best summer on earth for the worst.

You excluded, people love Phoenix. They want to sign and play here.

But hey, I'm sure Portland's had a high profile signing at some point, right? Buck Williams, maybe?

Jordan said...

eh, scottie pippen ranks up there. more rings than Charles Barkley.

I say Phoenix will be good for your marriage. Everyone looks better naked with a tan!

Dan said...

Scottie was traded, I think. Doesn't count.

Let's not argue anymore, Jordan. We're going to be neighbors, after all.

I am excited for the both of you. Granted, Phoenix is as hot as the 3rd level of hell, but this will be a great opportunity for you both.

Congratulations! i was pulling for slc too (i make it out to park city about 5 times a year, so that could have made for epic times).

i believe it will be a great experience, and it's always great for man and wife to forge their own way together. God Bless.

jordan, enjoy PDX from afar. i've had to do the same with seattle, and now that i'm finally back in seattle i'll have to keep doing that (choking back vomit and tears).

Dan: the Suns are 2 years away from competing within the lottery ala Miami. shaq always leaves desolation in his trail: orlando, LA (stank until this year), and now miami.

Again, congratulations on your new suburban adventure!

Welcome to the Valley of the Sun and Smog! Long time reader of your site but first time commentor. Phoenix Children's Hospital is one of the best in the Nation. I've survived 14 years here and I still don't like the summers.

Good luck and best wishes in your new adventure.

Peace!
Keith

Change is good. It frees your self from your location, it opens your mind, it stretches you. And when the residency's over, you can move ... anywhere! back to PDX or Hawaii or who knows.

Don't listen to Aaron. He just hates Eugene.
